Student Support

Academic Intervention

Our Academic Intervention programme is designed to provide additional support for students who are not currently making the progress expected in one or more subjects. Intervention is intended to be supportive rather than punitive, helping students develop effective study habits, close knowledge gaps and improve their confidence and attainment. Students may be required to attend scheduled intervention sessions, where they will complete targeted tasks agreed with their teacher and reviewed regularly. Progress is monitored closely, with clear review points in place to ensure that the support provided helps students achieve their full potential.

Attendance Phases

Strong attendance is one of the strongest indicators of success in Post 16. Students who attend regularly make greater academic progress, build stronger relationships with staff and peers, and are more likely to achieve positive outcomes at the end of their studies. To ensure that students receive the right level of support when attendance becomes a concern, we operate a staged Attendance Phase system.

Students whose attendance begins to decline are initially placed in Phase 0, where concerns are identified and monitored. If attendance does not improve, support is increased through Phase 1, led by the Academic Mentor, before progressing to Phase 2 and Phase 3, where senior staff become involved and work closely with students and parents/carers to remove barriers to attendance and re-establish positive habits. At every stage, the focus is on providing timely support, guidance and accountability, helping students maximise their opportunities and achieve their full potential.

SEND Provision

We are committed to ensuring that students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are fully supported to achieve their potential in Post 16. Our teaching staff have a clear understanding of individual needs and adapt their lessons, resources and approaches to help students access learning and make progress. We work closely with our Inclusion Team to ensure that appropriate support, reasonable adjustments and strategies are in place, both in the classroom, around the school, and during assessments where required. Students are encouraged to communicate with their teachers, Academic Mentor and the Inclusion Team so that we can work together to provide the support needed for a successful and positive Post 16 experience.

Wellbeing Support

At Post 16, we genuinely value the wellbeing of every student and recognise that good wellbeing is essential for success both academically and personally. Every student is assigned an Academic Mentor, who should be your first point of contact for support and guidance. As they work closely with you throughout your time in Post 16, they are often best placed to offer advice, listen to concerns and help you access additional support where needed. Students can also arrange to meet with our Post 16 Student Support Officer, Mrs Callaway, who offers bookable appointments for those who would like to discuss their wellbeing in a confidential and supportive environment. In addition, wellbeing is an important part of our Personal Development curriculum, where we explore topics such as managing stress, building resilience and accessing external support services.

These themes are reinforced through mentoring sessions, assemblies and guest speakers, ensuring students have the knowledge and strategies to maintain positive wellbeing throughout their Post 16 journey.
