Abbeywood Community School

Airbus Future Engineers programme

Last year twenty Y9 students took part in the Airbus Foundation Youth Programme and graduated in July.

Congratulations to, Ola, Jon, Ben, Hayden, Adam, Finley, Dan, Zoe, Tania, Sophie, Lexi, Zaine, Charlie, Davi, Faith, Carter, Connie, William, Matilda and Max.

The celebration was outstanding. Airbus took over the main hall at the Engineering Centre and created a wonderful back drop to showcase the event, skills and achievements of all 20 students. Almost all members of staff and apprentices who worked alongside the students attended along with the parents/carers. It was a full house!

Airbus employers who spoke at the graduation were engaging to listen to and were full of kind words for our students which provided such a professional, heart-warming and fitting end to a great year of work and commitment.

The second half of the programme focussed solely on designing and building their drones. This included lectures and activities on systems engineering, drone theory, complete design drawing, electrical components, bench testing, building and of course flying their drones during the final sessions.

As always, throughout the programme there was a strong emphasis on the importance of the development of employability skills; working as a team, building responsibility for one’s job role, developing clear and concise communication skills, sharing successes and building strength from failures.

All students received three certificates (along with other gifts) to recognise what they have achieved:

Gold Level Industrial Cadets Award

Basic Skills Certificate

Airbus Youth Foundation Award Certificate

Congratulations again to them all! We all wish them the very best with their future learning and careers.

This programme could not of happened without the support of the Friends of Abbeywood Community School (FACS).

We are very excited about this years programme which has already started with a new cohort of students.
