Bristol Bears Project Rugby Tournament

On 12 February 22 girls from Year 9 travelled to North Bristol RFC to take part in their first competitive touch rugby tournament. The opportunity was given after the girls have been receiving rugby coaching in PE lessons for the past six weeks from Bristol Bears Project rugby coaches. Luckily the weather held off and the girls were able to enjoy a great morning. Over the course of the project the girls have been lucky enough to meet Sami Pam starting player for Bears Ladies, take home rugby 'goodies' and win tickets for the men’s games. Next tournament in term 4.

Design Technology - Flying Start Challenge - STEM event

40 of our Year 7 students recently participated in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) event run by Flying Start Challenge. Throughout the morning students were involved in lessons which were delivered by volunteer engineers from MBDA. During these lessons they learnt about the fundamentals of flight and careers within the aviation and engineering industries.

The students, in teams of 4, had to then use this new knowledge to design and build a glider that fitted within the parameters of the competition. The teams then tested and made final adjustments ready for the main competition at the end of the day. The teams were judged on the following: distance flown, use of materials and total cost.

The students conduct throughout the day was exemplary and a credit to the school. I am pleased to announce that we have 3 teams from Abbeywood going through to the regional finals.

The teams are:  The Sawdusters, The Flying Falcons and The 4 Engineers

Huge congratulations to all the students who participated and an extended congratulations to the winning teams who now have a chance to reach the grand final which will be held at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovil.

Drama - A group of 60 ACS students, from Years 7-11, went to the Bristol Old Vic on Tuesday 8 January to see their production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, which was the theatre’s Christmas Performance.

The classic Christmas tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s transition from the miserly “humbug” was hugely affecting and incorporated puppets, dance, song and live music, all of which have become part of the theatre’s signature performance style. At times funny and poignant, the production also featured the more traditional aspects of Christmas pantomime, including local references and audience participation. In fact, one of our year 7 students, Ellie-Mae, was chosen from the audience and asked to go on stage to play the role of young Ebenezer, during the sequence with the Ghost of Christmas Past.

The Year 11 GCSE students will now have to write about the production as part of their assessment in the final written examination in May. Thank you to all those students who, as always, were impeccably behaved and to Mrs Harding, Ms Bamford and Miss Jones who accompanied us on the trip.
