Specialism

Abbeywood Community School has a specialism of Humanities, with lead subjects of English, Geography and Drama. Our specialism has provided the Humanities subjects with the opportunity to become more innovative in their curriculum and more collaborative in their approach to teaching. For example, in Year 7, students share learning on My Local Area, it enables students to connect their learning across the curriculum, and provides them with a richer experience leading to improved outcomes.

Our Humanities Specialism has allowed the school to invest in new technologies to enrich learning, through the use of iPads and flipcams, improving learning in the classroom. Students are given frequent opportunity to use iPads both in and outside the classroom, using a range of applications that promote independence. Flipcams are used to capture student learning and can be borrowed by students to support their learning at home.

The Humanities Specialism has also had an impact on learning across the whole school, with collaboration being central to the school’s improvement agenda. This has been realised through RAISE Days, which are whole-day enrichment opportunities and happen on three occasions during the academic year.
