Independent Home Learning (IHL)

Independent Home Learning - how we are making it more meaningful at ACS

At Abbeywood Community School we firmly believe that if homework is set with clear guidelines and a sense of purpose it will support the learning culture we are striving to achieve. We aspire to set home learning that is interesting and engaging and promotes independence. With your support, Independent Home Learning can encourage enthusiasm, produce excellent quality work and foster skills that will support children in their future studies.

At Key Stage 3 there is a blend of traditional home learning opportunities, such as in MFL and Mathematics that demand repetition and frequency and activities that promote a deeper independent learning style, in the form of learning challenges. All activities have a clear academic purpose and should be accessible, help students feel positive about themselves as learners, are relevant and promote ownership. We are moving in the direction of giving all students choices and opportunities to personalise their home learning. We will continue to evaluate the success of these activities and work with students and parents to provide the most meaninful home learning opportunities.

Key Stage 4 and 5 Independent Home Learning are largely driven by examination demands, but students are encouraged to think creatively and undertake further independent study.
